Project value ~ 6M
Completion deadline 2021
Client Administration of Šiauliai City Municipality

About the client

Šiauliai City Municipality was established in 1995 in Northern Lithuania, Šiauliai County. The municipal administration is involved in various fields of activity: architecture and urban planning, economy, social services, transport, public order, environmental protection, etc. The administrative centre of Šiauliai is 787 years old, dating back to the Battle of the Saulė in 1236, and is the fourth most populous city in the country. Visitors are attracted to Šiauliai by the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul, the nearby Hill of Crosses, spaces for recreation and active leisure – parks, lakes Talkša and Rėkyva, and cultural and leisure facilities.

INFES work

During the reconstruction works, hard surfaces such as granite, cobblestones and asphalt were installed. A modern fountain with special effects of light, music, and water, symbolizing the three birds, was installed. The technological equipment of the fountain in Rūdės Street was also renovated. The project was somewhat challenged by exploratory and archaeological research, which covered an area of 340.85 m². Fragments of pavement and buildings dating back to the first half of the 20th century were discovered in the amphitheatre area on the pedestrian boulevard. These findings led to changes in the reconstruction solutions.

Significance of the project

The reconstruction works resulted in the renewed pedestrian boulevard of Šiauliai, which is of great importance for tourist flows, for the cafes and shops operating on the boulevard, and for the daily needs of the city’s inhabitants. The amphitheatre on the pedestrian boulevard also revealed historically important archaeological artifacts.

Results

Following the reconstruction of the Šiauliai city communications, the city’s residents and visitors can now enjoy a more convenient and modern transport infrastructure, a new fountain with lights, music and special effects, and more comfortable spaces for recreation and everyday life. The renovated amphitheatre with green spaces, small architectural elements, and seating also became more attractive for visitors and events, and the adjacent outdoor playground is dedicated for children’s leisure activities.
