About the client

The administration of Alytus District Municipality is located in southern Lithuania, on both sides of the Nemunas river. Its administrative centre is Alytus, although it is not part of the municipality. The municipality was established in 1995 and comprises 2 towns – Daugai and Simnas, 3 small towns – Butrimonys, Krokialaukis, Nemunaitis, and 426 villages. The municipality has 11 elderships.

There are 72 archaeological, 395 historical, 144 art, 29 architectural, and 3 urban monuments in the Alytus district, as well as 19 mounds with ancient settlements. The Kurnėnai Laurynas Radziukynas School is located in the Miroslavas eldership of the Alytus district, and although it was closed down 14 years ago, it is of great importance to Lithuanian culture – 26 years ago it was entered into the Register of Cultural Property. The reconstruction of this building was started in 2019 and completed in 2020.

INFES work

The school underwent major external and internal renovations and had its roof replaced. The main hall, corridor, sanitary facilities, and tambour were refurbished in line with heritage requirements and the risk of accidents was removed. All the works were carried out while maintaining the authenticity of the interior.

The building’s engineering systems, such as heating, electricity, plumbing, ventilation, and fire alarms, were also upgraded.

Significance of the project

The school building is now used for public tourism purposes and focuses on education about cultural values. The resulting education centre, planned meals, craftsmen’s and artists’ workshops and training sessions will allow not only tourists, but also the population of the country to get a closer look at Lithuania’s cultural heritage.

Results

The school was adapted for new activities by preserving its authenticity and removing the threat of emergencies. The restored object can once again be used by visitors and attract tourists interested in Lithuanian culture.
