About the client
Established in the former Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Crafts on 1 October 1950, Kaunas Region Public Library (KRPL) is the largest state library in Central Lithuania. On 3 September 1987, the library was set up in the Chamber on Radastų St. 2 — a former entertainment course owned by Vytautas Park.
KRPL actively disseminates information about the history and cultural heritage of Kaunas, organizes events and exhibitions, and publishes representative publications.
A red brick library building has become a symbol of the city, therefore, the reconstruction was aimed at preserving its cultural and aesthetic value.
INFES work
INFES reconstructed the entire building, focusing on preserving authentic accent details such as marble decor, wood parquet floor, and other fixtures, and making energy consumption more efficient.
Children and youth spaces, as well as an events hall, were built on the library’s first floor, and a conference hall, an education class, a reading room, and a cafe were installed on the second floor. The third floor now has photography and recording studios and a creative space, while the fourth floor is equipped with education, work, reader leisure time, exposition spaces, and the Old Book Museum.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to stroll around the Little Oak Grove nestled on the roof terrace.
Results
After the completion of the project, the library has become more energy-efficient, modern, and spacious, yet still unique and original. The renovated library is expected to meet the evolving needs of society and attract more visitors seeking opportunities for study, work, and leisure.
