About the client

The Ninth Fort in Kaunas is one of the defensive reinforcements of Kaunas Fortress. It is an architectural and historical monument preserved by the state, and housing a museum operating since 1959. The Fort was built following the 1897 project of Prof. Konstantinas Velička.

The building has a complex history — the construction tasks were implemented in 1903-1913, and the Fort remained intact throughout World War I. During the interwar period, the building was used as a prison, and in 1940 it was converted into a prisoner transfer point to Soviet Union labor camps. During the Nazi occupation, it was used for mass murders.

Currently, the Ninth Fort Museum is a place for families, students, and visitor groups to learn more about history, spend quality time looking at exhibitions, and participate in events, memorials, and educational activities.

INFES work

Alongside other companies participating in the repair process, INFES is undertaking various tasks at the Ninth Fort building. These tasks include the installation of electrical engineering, heating, ventilation, and conditioning systems, as well as the restoration and installation of external networks.

Significance of the project

The building and the museum are essential in preserving the historical, architectural, and cultural heritage. They also serve to educate the public and provide opportunities for it to learn about the historical events that had an impact on the country. However, the outdated, deteriorating condition of the building and the territory causes higher heating bills, ineffective energy consumption, and affects employee work conditions, and visitor flows.

Results

Upon completion, the Ninth Fort building will be more modern, energy-efficient, comfortable, and adapted to the evolving needs of employees and visitors. The building will have new spaces for administration, a cafe, a visitor waiting hall, lockers, and other functional premises that ensure a pleasant and comfortable visit.
