Reconstruction of the Naglis Cinema in Palanga

Project value ~ 8M
Completion deadline Q4, 2026
Client Lithuanian Film Center

About the client

Lithuanian Film Center is a state institution established in 2012 with the main aim to promote the development of cinema and to participate in the formulation of film policy in Lithuania.

The institution coordinates the development of national cinema and administers state funds by organising project competitions and providing support for film production and development. The Center represents Lithuania in international organisations and takes care of the dissemination of film culture, attracting investment, introducing technology and preserving film heritage.

Since 2023, the Lithuanian Film Centre under the Ministry of Culture manages the Naglis Cinema in Palanga, which needs reconstruction to accommodate the Regional Film Library – a centre for attraction, dissemination and education of cinema and media in the Western Lithuanian region.

INFES work

The building will be divided into main functional areas: cinema, education and exhibition space, administrative space and residences. Each zone will have its own entrance, so that activities can be carried out independently without interfering with the others.

The ground floor of the building will include a lobby, educational and exhibition spaces, large and small cinema halls and a café. The second floor will house an audiovisual arts centre, administrative offices, a residency space, a gallery and a projection room for the Grand Hall. The underground space includes sanitary facilities, building services and storage. The entire film library will cover a total area of approximately 1400 square metres.

The access to the building will also be landscaped, with a terrace with an outdoor cinema screen in the eastern part of the building, visually connected to the cinema lobby. The cinema courtyard will expand into a space with parking spaces for summer screenings.

Results

After the works are completed, Palanga will have a modern, contemporary cultural space, which will become yet another attraction for residents and visitors. The Regional Film Library will become an important point of dissemination of film culture in Western Lithuania, attracting film lovers, artists and creators. It will organise educational programmes, film artist residencies and promote cooperation with the creative industries.
