About the client

The Lithuanian Museum of Ethnocosmology is the only museum of its kind not only in Lithuania, but also in the whole of Europe, surprising its visitors with unique exposition and architecture. The origins of the Museum date back to 1978, when a small astronomy museum was set up in the Molėtai Observatory, which attracted a great deal of public interest. It became clear that the true embodiment of the idea of ethnocosmology needed more individual purpose spaces, rooms, and buildings. The first design of the museum was created by architect V. Lisauskas. The Museum of Ethnocosmology was officially established immediately after the restoration of Lithuania’s independence, on March 15, 1990. In 2007-2008, after the reconstruction of the museum complex according to the idea of architects R. Krištopavičius, A. Gudaitis and sculptor A. Kuzma, the exterior of the museum took its current cosmic shapes.

INFES work

The renovation included the removal of metal ceiling panels and installation of wiring, interior lighting, and loudspeakers. A unified building control system was installed in accordance with the design solutions and a visualization was created in which all the connected systems are graphically represented in the building plan and as function diagrams.

An interactive lighting, exhibition control, and audio-visual system was installed, which is controlled by guides using tablets. Many areas of the museum were not waterproofed, allowing water and cold to penetrate. INFES carried out the waterproofing of the walls and ceiling of the underground gallery. Waterproofing work was also carried out on the ellipsoid which is installed at 45 metre height.

Results

Every year, this unique museum attracts thousands of Lithuanian and foreign visitors. After the reconstruction, the museum can offer visitors a much more interactive and enjoyable experience, and its staff have more suitable working conditions and easier management of the exhibition. The renovated museum space is hosting an increasing number of important meetings, educational and entertainment events. Now the Museum’s unique and innovative exhibition attracts the attention of both international museums and high-profile guests.
