About the client
AB Lietuvos oro uostai (LTOU) manages three international airports in Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga. The airport network is an integral part of the Lithuanian transport and communications system. The Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania implemented the rights and duties of the company’s owner for a long time. Since September 2023, the management board has assumed control, while the Government of the Republic of Lithuania retains its oversight role.
INFES work
INFES will conduct the reconstruction of all three floors of Kaunas Airport in stages. The plans for the project include the expansion of the baggage reclaim area, as well as the Schengen and non-Schengen area arrival zones. Additionally, new areas will be built to provide passengers with a more comfortable experience while waiting for flights, eating, and shopping.
Significance of the project
This year’s data suggests record-breaking passenger flows in Kaunas Airport: it is estimated that approximately 1.3 million travelers will utilize the airport’s services. Therefore, the expansion of the terminal is essential in responding to this year’s traveling tendencies. The reconstruction will also make the airport more capable of offering services to almost twice as many travelers — around 2M people — per year.
Results
As a result of the reconstruction, the overall terminal area is estimated to increase by 4,400 m2, with expansion planned for both arrival and departure areas. Additionally, airport service efficiency will also increase. Currently, Kaunas Airport can service four passenger flights at the same time, yet once the reconstruction is complete, the number should increase to six flights per hour.
