Reconstruction of the Nemenčinė Wastewater Treatment Plant

Project value ~ 13 M
Completion deadline 2028
Client Infes Tech

About the client

Infes Tech is a water treatment and wastewater solutions company and part of the Infes Group. The company helps its clients throughout the entire implementation journey for water and wastewater treatment systems: provides consultations on equipment performance, assists with selecting and testing suitable technologies, and offers design, construction management, installation, and ongoing equipment maintenance. Infes Tech works with private and commercial clients, as well as public-sector customers, delivering projects where water quality is verified using real data.

The Nemenčinė Wastewater Treatment Plant, located in Gaukštonys Village in Vilnius District, could not ensure efficient wastewater treatment due to outdated infrastructure that no longer met residents’ needs and the requirements for sustainable pollutant management. At the request of Vilniaus vandenys, UAB, it was decided to fully modernize the wastewater treatment infrastructure. This is a complex project from both environmental and technical perspectives, as the work is being carried out at a facility that operates around the clock without interrupting the continuous activities of the treatment plant.

Infes work

As part of the modernization of the Nemenčinė Wastewater Treatment Plant, a technology building, an imported wastewater reception building, fire water reservoirs, and drainage and wastewater pumping stations will be constructed on a 3.15-hectare site. The project also includes the installation of water supply, wastewater, drainage, electrical, electronic communications, and other engineering networks.

To enable on-site electricity generation, a 1 MW solar power plant with energy storage systems will be built within the wastewater treatment facility. Its installed capacity will be 999 kW.

The modernization will also upgrade the wastewater treatment process by constructing a bioreactor with a treatment capacity of 1,482 m³ per day. To comply with the environmental requirements for treated wastewater that will come into force in 2028, advanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal technology will be installed. This system will enable the removal of both organic matter and nutrient pollutants.

Results

Once the existing wastewater treatment infrastructure is upgraded, significantly more efficient treatment will be achieved. The modernization is expected to reduce the total amount of nitrogen and phosphorus in discharged wastewater by almost half. In addition, upon completion of all planned works, the wastewater treatment plant will comply with the new environmental requirements, ensuring more sustainable and efficient pollutant removal.
